Geisha and Cranes

19th Century Japanese woodcut and Japanese printed gilded wrapping paper. 19”x 24” (2023)

Private Collection

A series of works inspired by Japanese woodcuts—ukiyo-e— of the 18th and 19th centuries. The movement was first coined by art critic Philippe Burty in 1870. Japanese prints helped Western artists move away from traditional realism by introducing unusual viewpoints, flat perspectives, bold color juxtapositions, and innovative cropping. This had a significant impact on movements like Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. This artwork includes portions of ukiyo-e prints that are juxtaposed to a variety of background patterns.
